Flight Attendant Jobs - The flight attendant industry is a growing and burgeoning one, with over 100,000 flight attendants employed in the US alone.  There is also an expected increase of flight attendant jobs by  11% as projected by the  US Department of Labor, and that translates into a lot of jobs for those who wish to become flight attendants.

Airlines are required by law to have flight attendants on board all major US flights, to help on board the plan for the safety and security of the passengers. Which is very peculiar since airplanes have a known record of being 20 times safer than cars in terms of fatalities. Now that is a lot safer!

Flight attendant jobs usually consists of the following steps.

  • Helping passengers board and stow their luggage
  • Going over in flight safety procedures on the plane while taxiing on the runway
  •  Checking to make sure all passengers have their tray tables locked, seats to the forward position, and all seat belts buckled before the plane is in the air
  • Making sure passengers abide by the Captain’s seat belt on & off sign
  • Making sure no one smokes during the flight
  • Serving  passengers drinks, and offering them a snack or meal
  • Collecting the garbage from the customers left over meal
  • Cleaning the kitchen on board the flight deck before landing
  • Making sure that all passengers have their tray tables locked, seats to the forward position, and all seat belts buckled before landing
  • Helping all passengers off the plane
  • And generally making sure the plane looks decent for the next flight

That is the jist of what a flight attendant job entails while in the air of the flight. That doesn’t explain everything to a flight attendant job, but it gives you a rough idea. There is also dealing with unsavory passengers, and security precautions and actions that as a flight attendant you must take.

Flight attendant job training normally takes place at an airline hub over a timespan that may be 6 weeks to 6 months long depending upon what airline and country the flight attendant job training takes place in. The main thing that is now being taught in flight attendant training is safety and security. By United States Law there is a requirement for  one flight attendant for every 50 passengers on board flights bound for or in the United States. However many airlines have increased that number to more than on flight attendant for every 50 passengers giving flight attendants more job opportunities.

Flight attendant safety training requirements include the following:

  • Emergency passenger evacuation management
  • Use of evacuation slides and life rafts
  • In flight fire fighting
  • Survival in extreme climates: jungle, sea, desert and ice
  • First aid
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Defibrillation
  • Ditching/emergency landing procedures
  • Decompression emergencies
  • Crew Resource Management and security.

Flight attendants job salary is extremely diverse with an enormous amount of peotential and opportunity. As a flight attendant you could earn between $33,300 and $99,300 depending on how many hours you work.
